Maintaining instrument proficiency is an important part of being an instrument-rated pilot. An Instrument Proficiency Check gives you the chance to demonstrate the knowledge and skill required to operate under IFR when you no longer meet the applicable instrument experience requirements.
What is an IPC?
An Instrument Proficiency Check is a practical evaluation conducted in accordance with FAA requirements for pilots who need to regain instrument currency. It evaluates your ability to safely perform instrument operations and meet the applicable standards for instrument-rated pilots.
Unlike a routine flight lesson, an IPC is an evaluation of your instrument knowledge and flight proficiency. If additional instruction is needed, your instructor will work with you to address those areas before completing the required proficiency check.
A personalized approach to instrument proficiency.
Every instrument-rated pilot has a different level of experience. Your instructor will begin by discussing your recent IFR experience, aircraft, avionics, and areas where you may need additional practice. The IPC can then be structured to focus on the skills most relevant to your flying.
Our objective is not simply to complete the paperwork. It's to ensure you're prepared to safely and confidently return to instrument operations.
Returning to IFR flying?
If you've been away from instrument flying for an extended period, you may benefit from additional training before completing the IPC. We can spend additional time reviewing instrument procedures, approaches, navigation, avionics, or any other areas where you'd like more practice.
There's no advantage to rushing through an IPC. The priority is developing the proficiency and confidence necessary to safely return to IFR operations.
IPC vs. instrument currency.
An IPC is different from maintaining normal instrument currency. Pilots can generally maintain instrument currency by completing the required instrument experience within the applicable period.
When those requirements aren't met, an IPC may be used to regain instrument proficiency, subject to the applicable FAA regulations. Your instructor can review your recent instrument experience and help determine what's required for your individual situation.
